Information packs promote fitness activities for kids in East Riding

Date: 05/02/2010 / Category: School holidays and working parents

East Riding Council and the NHS are providing families with more information about healthy eating and fitness activities for kids.

After it was discovered that one in ten five-year-olds and almost the same number of 11-year-olds were classed as obese last year, the council and service decided to join forces, the East Riding Mail reports.

Dawn Branton, public health obesity lead for NHS East Riding of Yorkshire, told the newspaper that the information packs that had been handed out, detailing how to eat better and exercise more had been "really successful".

"Recent results show that numbers of overweight children in the region are lower than the average for the whole of England," she added.

She went on to say that teaching children about healthy eating and exercise for kids from an early age can help them to lead a healthier lifestyle when they are older.

Emphasising the importance of exercise, Sheila Franklin, executive director of the US National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity, recently said that regular fitness activities for kids can help to prevent chronic illness.
