School bans birthday cakes

A school in Hertfordshire has banned children from bringing sweets and cakes into school to celebrate their birthdays.
Head teacher at Wood End Primary School in Harpenden sent a letter to parents saying: "We gained healthy eating status in 2006 and as such we ask you NOT to send in sweets or cakes to celebrate your child's birthday with their class."
The school claimed the move was also to ensure "equality of opportunity for all pupils", as some children bringing in treats was unfair on those that were unable to do so.
A spokesperson for the school said: "We also have to be careful because some children have food allergies and could have a reaction to some ingredients. Like most schools we also encourage our pupils to eat a healthy diet."
Earlier this year the primary school stopped youngsters playing football in the playground in a health and safety crackdown.
Soft play centres are ideal places for children's birthday parties as they provide a safe, fun environment for children to celebrate, exercise and even eat cake.
