McDonald's defends attitude to kids nutrition and fitness

Mcdonald's chief executive Jim Skinner has defended the fast-food chain's record of encouraging nutrition and fitness for kids.

In a response to a Center for Science in the Public Interest press release from last month, which threatened legal action over the inclusion of toys in McDonald's Happy Meals for children.

Mr Skinner wrote: "McDonald's makes available in-depth, comprehensive nutrition information about our food to give parents the support they need to make appropriate choices for their children."

He also suggested that consumers recognise the positive role local franchises play in supporting youth athletics and other activities in the country.

In May, McDonald's launched a Shrek-themed Happy Meal that it claimed encourages children to eat more fruits, vegetables and dairy.

Happy Meal choice items include Apple Dippers and low-fat milk jugs. The restaurant chain also estimates that half of Happy Meals worldwide are sold with either a fruit, vegetable, milk, juice or water option.
