Encourage kids to look after teeth to maintain 'life-long oral health'

Children's birthday parties often include the consumption of lots of sugary foods but, aside from limiting the intake of such treats, there are many steps parents can take to ensure their kids have good oral health, according to the American Dental Association (ADA).

As part of the US's National Children's Dental Health Month, the ADA is advising parents to encourage their children to take care of their teeth as, once learned, oral health habits will be maintained throughout life.

"Routine dental exams uncover problems that can be treated in the early stages, when damage is minimal and restorations may be small," a statement from the ADA said.

It also advised encouraging children to drink from a cup by their first birthday and making sure that kids use a mouth guard when playing sports such as hockey and rollerblading.

Soft play centres, such as Gambado, offer party packages where children can enjoy sugar-free drinks which will not harm their teeth while they play in a safe, fun environment for kids.
