Zero tolerance in schools 'inconsistently enforced'

Date: 11/05/2010 / Category: Indoor play for schools and groups

Students do not feel safer in schools that have a zero tolerance policy on rule breaking, new research suggests.

Inconsistent enforcement is one of the main issues that arose from a study conducted by Michigan State University researchers that will appear in the May issue of Urban Education.

Based on the results of the study, which involved questioning well and badly-behaved children across 15 urban high schools in the US, lead researchers Christopher Dunbar and Laura McNeal recommended that enforcement is conducted with a non-bias approach, with reference to clearly defined rules, such as on site and when on school trips for kids.

The authors added that updating school and facility security is also an important step to improving the effectiveness of zero tolerance policies, where inconsistencies have previously been perceived as mitigating some beneficial effects.

In the UK, education union Voice principal officer Deborah Simpson called for UK state schools to be given access to more funding to improve the quality of education at a local level.
