Potty training should not start before 27 months, claims expert

Date: 25/01/2010 / Category: Indoor play for schools and groups

Parents should not incorporate potty training into their routine list of things to do with kids until they are between 27 and 32 months old, it has been claimed.

New research into the best age to begin potty training is the first study to give parents a good idea of the right time to train, according to a leading child development expert.

Speaking to Health Day News, lead author of the new research Dr Joseph Barone explained that there are two schools of thought on potty training.

He told the website: "One is to try to train the kids very, very early, and another says you should wait until kids are older and demonstrating signs of being ready.

"But there has never been a study scientifically showing when is the best time."

However, research by Dr Barone and colleagues suggests that potty training any earlier than 27 months could lengthen the learning process, while any later than 32 months tends to carry a higher risk of bedwetting and daytime wetting.

It follows research presented to the Pediatric Academy Society meeting in Hawaii in 2008, which indicated that many parents have unrealistic expectations about their child's development, such as when best to potty train them or when they are likely to start talking.
