Parking near schools could be banned to encourage exercise for kids

Date: 30/12/2009 / Category: Indoor play for schools and groups

Children in Manchester are not getting enough exercise for kids, the Greater Manchester Health Commission (GMHC) has suggested, so it has proposed banning parents from parking near schools to encourage pupils to walk or cycle in.

The GMHC has suggested that parking around schools should be made resident-only so that daily exercise for kids is increased, the Daily Mail reports.

Director of the Greater Manchester Public Health Network, Will Blandamer, told the newspaper: "The basic idea is to try and make walking and cycling and active travel as easy as possible and particularly to promote it among children."

The NHS said that children should do 60 minutes of fitness activities for kids per day. It said that this is important for growth and development as it helps to strengthen bones and muscles and it also reduces the risk of obesity.

Parents who are unable to walk to school with their children could take them to an indoor play centre where they can engage in exercise in a safe, fun environment for kids.
