Outdoor classrooms allow children to become 'self-reliant'

A safe, fun environment for children has been created at a primary school in Wales that hopes to become one of Britain's greenest educational establishments.
Edwardsville Primary, near Merthyr Tydfil, has opened three outdoor classrooms after receiving £100,000 in grant funding, the BBC reports.
Pupils are already benefiting from horticulture lessons, which are linked to biology, history, maths and geology.
Jonathan Rigby, the school's deputy head teacher, told the news provider that the classrooms will allow children to learn how to grow, harvest and cook their own food.
"It's about preparing the next generation to be more self-reliant, children will learn the skills that many say will be needed in a world where energy is in short supply and more food will be grown locally," he commented.
However, time outside is weather permitting, so during rainy days, soft play centres provide a safe, fun environment for kids to exercise and socialise.
In 2008, Edwardsville became one of the first schools in Wales to receive the BECTA ICT mark, which recognises learning achievements in IT.
