Most obese kids "not getting adequate support"

Date: 20/10/2009 / Category: Indoor play for schools and groups

The importance of fitness activities for kids has been outlined recently as a survey found 60 per cent of obese children feel they do not receive adequate support to tackle their weight issues at school.

A survey from Carnegie Weight Management (CWM) also found that 42 per cent of children claim they face bullying because of their weight.

Dr David Ashton at Healthier Weight, said schools need to encourage exercise for kids, which can include walking.

He went on to say: "Seriously obese children have a chronic disease which is the result of an adverse gene-environment interaction.

"They need referring to a special unit with experience of managing seriously obese children, including the use of surgery where appropriate."

According to the NHS's Change4Life campaign website, active kids are happy kids - they like to be running around and having fun but they do not do this enough at present.

The website said kids need to do at least 60 minutes a day of physical activity that gets their heart beating faster than usual, which can include active play at soft play centres.ADNFCR-2594-ID-19417754-ADNFCR
