Exercise for kids encouraged through indoor fitness trails

Date: 13/01/2010 / Category: Indoor play for schools and groups

Exercise for kids is being increased and improved in American schools thanks to the installation of indoor fitness trails.

The Clinton Memorial Hospital Foundation funded the fitness equipment in November and now 12 elementary schools in Clinton County are able to host an increased variety of fitness activities for kids, the Lansing State Journal reports.

Peter Shannon, director of the foundation, told the newspaper: "The idea is to give kids some good physical fitness stuff to do on these cold days that they're kept indoors."

He went on to say that children should be doing at least an hour of exercise for kids each day and "it's hard for the schools to do".

The techniques learned in gym classes can be practiced elsewhere, for example doing star-jumps at home or jogging around a soft play centre.

According to the NHS, obesity rates have almost quadrupled over the last 25 years but the condition can be prevented through regular exercise.
