Avoid trans fat in children's foods

Date: 22/06/2010 / Category: Indoor Play for kids

Parents encouraging exercise for kids should make sure to exclude trans fats from their children's diets.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued fresh guidance for preventing the development of coronary diseases by calling for an exclusion of saturated fats from diets.

It has leant support to the on-going campaign launched by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for the introduction of front-of-the pack labelling in traffic light colours to help shoppers easily understand the calorie, salt and sugar content of their food purchases.

Betty McBride, director of policy at the BHF, said: "We've already seen some progress by industry on reducing levels of salt in processed food. We must see industry making major efforts now to reformulate products with less saturated fat. Cutting our 'sat fat' intake would have a major impact on heart disease."

Last week, ministers in the European Parliament failed to vote for a standard form of food-labelling across the continent despite health experts calling for such a move.
