'Strong link' between IVF and autism

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) has been linked to a higher risk of autism spectrum disorders, according to a new piece of research.
The study, carried out at the Autism Center at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in Israel, found that autism rates were higher in children conceived through IVF.
Births facilitated by the IVF method raised the chances of children being born with autistic developmental problems to 10.5 per cent, in comparison to the usual 3.5 per cent rate in Israel.
Dr Ditza Zachor of Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine, said the aim of the research was not to discourage infertile couples from considering the artificial fertilisation options but to give them more knowledge about their decision.
She said: "Many infertile couples choose this procedure, and they need to know whether there is a risk of autism."
Children with autism spectrum disorders show difficulties when communicating and interacting with those around them, according to the NHS. Playing and meeting other children at soft play centres might help in their developmental process.
