Soft play area included in plans for £10m special school

A soft play area has been included in plans for a £10 million school in Lancashire for children with special needs, highlighting the importance of play in child development.

Planning permission for Millwood Special School was granted by Bury Council's planning control committee earlier this week, thisislancashire.co.uk reported.

The school is currently located in Bury, but will move to the new site in Radcliffe when it is completed.

"Millwood meets the needs of the most vulnerable children in the borough and the rebuild of Millwood has been identified as a key priority," the newspaper reported Paul Cooke, the council's head of school organisation, as saying.

As well as the soft play area, the school will have three separate areas for children with different educational needs including 14 classrooms, a hydrotherapy room, soft play rooms and a library.

There will also be areas for the staff and spaces where training sessions can be held.

Last month, a spokesperson for TreeHouse, the national charity for autism education, said that those working with young children, which could include staff at indoor play centres, should be given training in how to support autistic kids.
