Kids play 'overlooked' by many Brits

Date: 17/08/2009 / Category: Indoor play for disability schools and groups

Kids play is often overlooked as beneficial for children's development skills, according to a childcare expert.

Speaking to the Herald, Sandra Welsh explained that play is often overlooked by colleagues and parents, who assume play is "just about having fun".

She told the newspaper: "Play isn't just about having fun, it is educational as well.

"We are very knowledgeable in all areas of play and how it can meet children's needs, whether they are educational, physical or to do with health and wellbeing."

She added that it extends beyond childcare and impacts everyday recreation.

Recent research by Elastoplast indicates that parents do not believe children are as creative in their play as they used to be.

However, the research also shows that six in ten parents rely on schools, TV and computer games to encourage creative development, perhaps at the expense of traditional methods such as soft play and toys.ADNFCR-2594-ID-19316307-ADNFCR
