Children 'miss out on education and soft play time due to poor hygiene'

Poor hygiene is causing children to lose valuable lesson time, according to recent research, and they could also miss out on taking part in soft play.

A recent study conducted by Carex shows that 30 per cent of children miss school due to contracting illnesses that can be avoided by observing simple hand hygiene.

Over 60 per cent of these cases involved common colds, flu, sickness bugs and diarrhoea.

Dr Carol Cooper, a family health expert, said that it is really important for children to remember to wash their hands properly.

"Walking past a tap that's running is not the same as washing your hands - you really do have to wash them properly to prevent catching common bacteria and viruses," she added.

The research by Carex also revealed that 43 per cent of parents have been forced to take unpaid leave to care for their children when they are poorly.
